Recently i was told that someone that i sort of know (man) celebrated 50 years of marriage.

This man deserves a statue ! Without a doubt he deserves a statue !

Why ? is simple...

Take a look at Nelson Mandela (anti-apartheid activist and former President of South Africa).

He was in jail for 30 years and soon as he got out; he filed for divorce .
While this other guy did 50!
